Yesterday I had a conversation with one of my athletes about their GOALS. He told me he wanted to place top 3 in the state this year. The reality was that it is not much harder to win states than to take 3rd and the guy winning states will probably have a good shot at placing at Nationals. So I asked him one question in response:
“If your goal was to win a National Title this year would you do anything differently?”
He answered “YES, Of Course!”
The amount of work you put in is directly correlated to the goal you set.
I had a goal to be an All-American in college, and I felt the effort I put in was enough. If I set my goal to win a National Title or be an Olympic Champ, I might have trained a little harder, changed my diet, reviewed my matches more.
Looking back I do have some regrets on how I trained, and I don’t want my athletes to experience the same thing. That’s why I encourage my athletes to set bigger goals and do everything you can to accomplish them!
Best,
