Wrestling Weight Classes for Kids – What Parents Need to Know

One of the first questions parents ask me is: “What weight class should my child be in?”

It’s a fair question. Weight classes can feel confusing when you’re new to the sport.

Here’s the simple version: kids wrestle against other kids in the same age group and weight range. The goal is fair, safe matches — not starving a kid to make a number.

How It Works

Most youth tournaments use age brackets (6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, 15U, etc.) and then weight classes inside those brackets. Exact numbers change by tournament and state association, but the principle is the same.

At Iron Faith we focus on healthy, sustainable weight. We want athletes strong, confident, and able to practice hard every week — not drained from cutting weight too early.

My Advice to Parents

  • Don’t obsess over the scale in the early years. Let kids grow and get stronger.
  • Focus on technique, conditioning, and effort first. The weight will sort itself out as they develop.
  • When it is time to manage weight for competition, do it with a plan (nutrition, hydration, and smart training) — never extreme methods.
  • Talk to the coaches. We’re here to help you navigate this the right way.

I’ve seen too many young wrestlers burn out because the focus shifted from improvement to “making weight” too soon.

At Iron Faith our vision is a community where everyone helps each other get better. That includes helping families make smart, healthy decisions around weight.
