How to Start Wrestling as a Beginner (Even If You’re Starting Late)

Unless you started at 4 years old you probably had the thought “I started WRESTLING too LATE.” or “I wish I started wrestling earlier.”

I’ve heard this from so many kids and parents. Here’s the truth: it doesn’t matter when you start. What matters is what you do once you start.

I’ve seen kids begin in middle school or even high school and still go on to become state champions and All-Americans. The difference wasn’t when they started — it was how intentional they were once they got in the room.

Simple Steps to Get Started the Right Way

  • Show up consistently. The athletes who improve the fastest are the ones who treat practice like the most important part of their week.
  • Focus on stance, motion, and the 3 main shots (single, double, high crotch). Master the basics before you chase flashy moves.
  • Find a room that pushes you and encourages you. The best environments are the ones where wrestlers and coaches push each other, encourage each other, and help everyone get better.
  • Build a system, not a random list of moves. Drill a small set of high-percentage techniques over and over. That’s how real progress happens.

If your child is just starting (or starting “late”), the goal isn’t perfection. The goal is improvement and effort every single practice.

That’s how limiting beliefs get broken. That’s how confidence gets built.
